“Kicking for those who can’t.”

Each year, Dong’s School holds a tournament open to all it’s students who have achieved the rank of orange belt and above. These students train hard for many weeks leading up to the tournament on forms and sparring techniques. My son, Noah, has participated in 5 out of the 7 years he’s been taking Tae Kwon Do. The tournament also features demonstrations from many of the surrounding branches as well as an exciting breaking competition. What’s most important, is all of the proceeds benefit Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Over the years, the tournament has raised almost $450,000 to benefit medical care for children right in our hometown.

I’ve had the pleasure of being a photographer for the event and it’s always an exciting change from portraits. I love shooting sports and if it includes my child, even better! If you are looking for a unique individual sport with so many physical and mental benefits, I highly recommend visiting Dong’s School. Grandmaster Dong has multiple achievements including being one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the US, member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and voted one of the Top 10 Martial Arts Schools in America. Pretty impressive and we are so honored Noah has received his black belt under his instruction. Here are some highlights from this year’s tournament:

I was completely on edge while Noah competed. You see, sparring has been his weakness, but this year something changed. He was ready, came out strong, and showed so much enthusiasm. I was so proud of the sportsmanship he showed toward his fellow blackbelts he was competing against. Noah defeated his first opponent in 36 seconds and advanced to the final round. He then defeated his second opponent in 1:06 and took first place for the very first time. Most importantly, Noah realizes the importance and purpose of the tournament and has a givers heart. Yes, I am super proud!
