frequently asked questions

Q. How far in advance should I book?
A. As soon as possible! My calendar opens in late winter for the current year and sessions are booked first come, first served. Feel free to reach out at any time in case I have a last minute opening.

Q. What if it rains?
A. We're at the mercy of the weather when shooting outdoors. I leave openings in my calendar for weather-related purposes. Because forecasts can change so quickly, I try to wait until noon the day of your session to make weather-related decisions unless it's very clear we will have to reschedule. If there's more than a 50% chance of rain, the radar is showing incoming precipitation, strong wind gusts, or it's very hot or humid (typically above 92 degrees), it's better to be safe than sorry. My goal is for your session to be enjoyable and for you to look and feel your best!

Q. Do you shoot weekend sessions?
A. Like many of you, I have a family and many personal obligations. I'm available for a few select weekend dates per year for Exclusive Sessions. My weekday session start times are in the late evenings during spring - early winter depending on sunset time. Fall sessions in October and November usually start mid or late afternoon.

Q. Do you offer the formal drape or tuxedo portrait for seniors?
A. Yes, I offer the formal portrait at the beginning of your on-location session. I occasionally have formal-only dates available in the fall.

Q.  Where do you shoot your sessions?
A. My shorter sessions are held in the Glen Allen/West End/Ashland areas for scheduling purposes. My longer sessions can be held at various Central Virginia locations within 20 miles of my home studio. My clients receive session prep materials and location options once booking is complete. Occasionally, I offer sessions at coastal locations on select dates.

Q. Do you retouch your images?
A. Yes, I retouch with a light hand. I remove obvious blemishes but focus on maintaining natural skin texture. I do not remove permanent scars or birthmarks and will never alter the composition of features. Tan lines or sunburn can be softened, but please be mindful of the sun in the weeks leading up to your session. Undergarments must be hidden under clothing. Clothing must be steamed or ironed prior to your session. Removing wrinkles from photos is extremely time consuming and will require an extensive edit fee per image.

Q. What if my child/teen doesn't enjoy being photographed or is very shy?
A. I'm shy, too and completely understand! For young children, I usually have a trick up my sleeve to capture their interest, but sometimes really young children can have an "off" day. Keeping things positive and making sure kids are rested and fed is key, so keep that in mind when planning your session. For seniors, I've put all of my shy clients at ease, even the guys! My sessions are fun, easy, and comfortable. If you know your child may be particularly nervous or has a disability, please let me know in advance.

Q. Where can I print my photos?
A. My clients are welcome to  print using a vendor of their choice, but I cannot guarantee quality or color correctness from a lab other than my own. I never recommend printing at pharmacies or discount stores as the quality is inconsistent. I offer gorgeous professional prints, wall art, and custom cards directly from your online gallery of images. My lab is exclusive to professional photographers, so you know you're getting the best quality. I guarantee my lab's prints for color, clarity, and years of enjoyment!
